Overview

1

Foam chamber is a fixed fire-fighting device designed to protect storage tanks containing flammable or combustible liquids. It is widely used in industries such as oil & gas, petrochemical plants, chemical storage facilities, and fuel depots. By delivering foam gently onto the surface of the liquid, a foam chamber effectively suppresses fire, prevents re-ignition, and minimizes vapor release. It is installed on the roof or upper shell of a storage tank and is connected to a foam-water supply system. When activated, the foam solution flows through the chamber, where it is aerated and discharged onto the tank wall. The foam then slides smoothly over the liquid surface, forming a stable blanket that extinguishes fire without agitating the fuel.

Foam chambers are especially suitable for fixed roof tanks storing products such as crude oil, gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, solvents, and other hydrocarbons.

How a Foam Chamber Works

The operation of a foam chamber follows a simple and reliable process:

Foam Solution Supply – A premixed foam solution is delivered from a foam proportioning system

.

Foam Generation – Inside the foam chamber, air is entrained to produce finished foam.

Deflector Action – The foam strikes a deflector plate, reducing velocity and preventing fuel disturbance.

Gentle Application – Foam flows down the tank wall and spreads evenly across the liquid surface.

Fire Suppression – The foam blanket cools the surface, suppresses vapors, and cuts off oxygen.

This controlled application is critical for flammable liquid fires, where splashing or agitation could worsen the situation.

Key Features and Advantages

Gentle Foam Discharge – Prevents fuel agitation and flashback.

High Fire-Extinguishing Efficiency – Rapid knockdown and vapor suppression.

Low Maintenance – Simple mechanical structure with high reliability.

Durable Construction – Typically made of carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum alloy.

Compatibility – Works with AFFF, AR-AFFF, and other approved foam concentrates.
