Overview

A foam inductor (also called a foam proportioner or foam eductor) is a firefighting device that mixes foam concentrate with water at a predetermined ratio, creating a foam solution that can be expanded into finished foam for fire suppression. It works on the Venturi principle, using the energy of pressurized water flow to draw in and mix the foam concentrate.

Functions

Proportioning: Ensures correct mixing ratio of foam concentrate (typically 1%, 3%, or 6%) with water.

Transport: Delivers premixed foam solution to nozzles or foam-making equipment.

Consistency: Provides reliable and consistent foam quality for effective firefighting.

Compatibility: Works with a range of foam concentrates (AFFF, AR-AFFF, protein-based foams, fluorine-free foams, etc.).

Working Principle

Foam inductors operate on the Venturi effect:

Water enters the inductor at high pressure.

The design creates a restriction (narrow throat) in the water path, increasing velocity and reducing pressure.

This low-pressure zone at the throat draws foam concentrate from a connected foam container via suction.

The foam concentrate mixes with the water stream at the set proportioning rate.

The resulting foam solution exits the inductor and can be further aerated through foam nozzles, branch pipes, or monitors.

Types of Foam Inductors

(a) Based on Installation

Portable Inductor

Compact, lightweight, connected between water supply hose and foam branch pipe.

Common in mobile firefighting (fire trucks, industrial plants).

Fixed (Inline) Inductor

Installed permanently in foam systems (sprinkler/foam chamber systems).

Provides automatic proportioning in storage tanks, warehouses, or petrochemical facilities.

(b) Based on Design/Function

Inline Foam Inductor

Placed directly in the hose line; mixes concentrate into the water stream.

Bypass Foam Inductor

Allows switching between foam operation and plain water flow without disconnecting equipment.

Variable Flow Inductor

Adjustable to different flow rates and foam percentages. Useful in multi-purpose operations.

Fixed Flow Inductor

Calibrated for one specific flow and foam percentage. Provides high accuracy and reliability.

(c) Specialized Types

Around-the-Pump Proportioner

Mounted on fire trucks, uses pump discharge pressure to draw concentrate into the system.

Balanced Pressure Proportioner (BPP)

Maintains equal pressure between water and foam concentrate for precise mixing, common in large industrial systems.

In-line Balanced Pressure Inductor (ILBP)

Uses a balancing valve to regulate concentrate flow.

Key Parameters

Induction Ratio: Typically 1%, 3%, or 6% depending on foam type.

Working Pressure: Usually effective between 5–12 bar (varies by manufacturer).

Flow Range: From 100 L/min (small portable units) up to several thousand L/min (fixed inductors).

Suction Height: Foam concentrate must usually be positioned close to or below the inductor to ensure proper suction.

Applications

Fire brigades (portable foam firefighting).

Oil & gas facilities (storage tanks, loading racks).

Aircraft hangars.

Chemical plants.

Marine and offshore platforms.

Warehouses storing flammable liquids.
